CAMP! - Contemporary Art Meeting Point
4 Efpolidos str. & 2 Apellou str., Kotzia Square, Athens GR

Following the exhibition The Athens Underground, on Monday, October 22, CAMP opens the exhibition entitled Counter Culture: The emergence of a new social subject covering the period 1983-2012. The show aims to outline and to present the opportunity of an interpretation of this phenomenon in as many as possible of its manifestations. From Convoy, the last libertarian culture magazine of the first period and at the same time the first of the second period, to fanzines, punk gigs’ posters, the high school students’ occupation movement, the squatting, and comics and from publications supporting those incarcerated in mental hospitals and the criminal prisoners to magazines that highlight gender identities. The exhibition presents with particular emphasis the antisystemic work of visual artists, whether it concerns portable artworks or street art, activist posters and improvised publications. The exhibition approaches the gradual rise and radicalization of the counter culture phenomenon during the 80’s until its outburst during the 2000’s when it becomes the basic parameter of the constitution of young people’s conscience. It attempts to palpate punk and hip-hop’s relation with the autonomous action, the new community spirit, the occupation movement in fine arts schools, the criminal prisoner as a romantic archetype, the political dimension of the football fans’ culture and it approaches the platform created by Cheap Art in Exarchia. Facing the counter culture phenomenon as a whole, the show aims to come into dialogue with the historical juncture of the social and economic crisis.

During its duration, the exhibition will be accompanied by events and discussions on its key themes.

Additionally, a richly illustrated book will be released with analytical approaches to the counter culture phenomenon by researchers and scholars.
